What were the major patterns of Native American life in North America before Europeans arrived
ReplyDeleteThe major patterns of native Indian life was that many tribes were mostly at peace with each other and did not discriminate each other. The family structure of an Indian family was that the parents both played great roles in decisions make as opposed to Europeans, where all the power was centered around the husband. The responsibility is distributed depending on the where they for example, if they live where game is abundant, the husband will go hunt for long periods of time and the wife will tend to the fields. Before the European arrived, the Indians were rather superstitious as the conducted dances meant to appease spirits in the form of animals to gain better harvests
How did Indian and European ideas of freedom differ on the eve of contact?
Indian ideas of freedom are that they are not bound by tribe differences and are entitled to land given to them by the "creator". However the European's idea of freedom is that by becoming servants of God and honoring the Bible they become free.
A1: Some major patterns that Native Americans had in North America before Europeans arrived was that it consisted of trade networks, irrigation systems, they spoke the same language in each group, and religious beliefs. They would hunt large animals but turned out the animals they hunted became extinct over time. The Native Americans were happy in they so called “ freedom” , no one owned a piece of land, if anything the land belonged to everyone. The gender relations played a huge role. For example, “ The system of gender relations in most Indians societies also differed markedly from that of Europe”.
ReplyDeleteB3: When the peoples of the America’s came in contact with Europeans they discovered they had different beliefs, and that’s when their problems started. Europeans viewed Indian men as weak and Indian women as mistreated. For example, “ Indian women worked in the fields as their husbands was so lazy that they forced their wives to do most of the productive labor”.Also Disease and trade played a part of the relations between the Indians and Europeans.
A2.How did Indian and European ideas of freedom differ on the eve of contact?
ReplyDeleteEuropeans saw Indians as “to free” and
lacking order plus discipline that Europeans considered a key factor to civilization. As stated in the book “Europeans considered Indian men “unmanly” too weak to exercise authority within their families and restrain their wives’ open sexuality, and so lazy that they forced their wives to do most of the productive labor”. From this Europeans insisted on subduing the Indians and thought “ they were actually bringing them freedom—the freedom of true religion, private property, and the liberation of both men and women from uncivilized and unchristian gender roles.” However Indians judged each other according to their ability to live up to widely settled ideas of appropriate behavior. It states”Indian culture, group autonomy and self-determination, and the mutual obligations that came with a sense of belonging and connectedness, took precedence over individual freedom.”
B3. What happened when the peoples of the Americas came in contact with Europeans?
In the Indian populations there was a suffering from decline due to the contact with Europeans . Their widespread of wars, enslavement, and BAD diseases like smallpox, influenza, and measles caused this decline. Never having encountered these diseases, Indians had not developed antibodies to fight them which lead to the near death of the population. “The result was devastating. Many West Indian islands were all but depopulated.”
A1: What were the major patterns of Native American life in North America before Europeans arrived?
ReplyDeleteNorth American was not an empty space with nothing around or in it when the Europeans had arrived. It contained cities, roads, irrigation systems, extensive trade networks , and large structures such as the pyramid temples. But with every good cause there is always some down falls the North Americans had not developed, “the scale , grandeur, or centralized organization of the Aztec and Inca societies to their south.” The North Americans also lacked the technologies Europeans had mastered, such as metal tools and machines, gun powder and the scientific knowledge that was necessary for long distanced traveling.
B4: what were the chief features of the Spanish empire in America?
The Spanish empire included the most popular events of the New World and the riches of natural resources. Government- Authority originated with the king and flowed downside through the Council of the Indies- the main body in Spain for colonial administration. “The Catholic Church played an significant role in the administration of Spanish colonies”, Quite often over “ruling their power its authority on matters of faith, morals, and treatment of the Indians.”
2. How did Indian and European ideas of freedom differ on the eve of contact?
ReplyDeleteIndian and European ideas differed in so many different ways. One for example, had to do with wealth and how the Indians were not big on wealth and possessions but did not mind giving out gifts or being generous overall. To the contrary, Europeans only cared about being wealthy and did not care how they acquired their wealth, as long as they had money to their name they were set for life. Next comes the religion part, where the Indians used their religion from hunting and farming and it called out to the one of above to ward off evil spirits. While Europeans used their religion to cover up all the sinful deeds they have committed;they used it as if it was a weapon. Lastly, women are seen differently from both cultures. Indian women played a big part in taking care of the farming while the men when to hunt, premarital and divorce was an option, men even moved in with his in-laws after marrying his wife, and etc. However, European women surrender their legal identity after being wedded. Women cannot do anything: own property, sign contracts, earn and control their central wages, write a separate will, wtc. Overall Indians were more carefree with their culture and Europeans thought spreading their "culture" would help Indians stop acting so savagely.
3. What happened when the peoples of the Americas came in contact with Europeans?
The peoples in the Americas were just going about their days, minding their own business, then the colonizers came to try to claim ownership of the peoples' lands. The peoples refused to listen to their ignorance but the colonizer's advanced technology and their diseases overpowered the said peoples and the colonizers invaded their home. The colonizers even enslaved many of them so the peoples can grow resources for them. This unfaithful meeting brought such tragedy upon the peoples.
A1: The major pattern of Native American life in North America before the Europeans arrived was that everyone was at peace with their given living standards and surrounding. They had trade networks, a common language and religion. Overall they were a community who shared common belief and wanted the best for each-other. For food they would hunt animals, over time these animals became extinct. They would share everything as if they were on big family.
ReplyDeleteB3: When the peoples of the Americas came in contact with the Europeans everything they knew was flipped upside down. The Europeans came to conquer and that’s exactly what they did. They made the land theirs, brought advanced technology and life changing diseases. The natives were later enslaved and life as they knew before became fictitious.

ReplyDeleteA2.How did Indian and European ideas of freedom differ on the eve of contact?
ReplyDeleteEuropeans and Indians had different Ideals and principles from the beginning. The english had a more materialistic view of the world. They didn’t really care about wealth or possessions. They had access to an abundance of wealth, but they didn’t abuse. They were a lot more free willed and less restricted by laws and rules. They were nomadic, so they weren’t chained to one location, they had to freedom to go anywhere they want. This did not mean that they didn’t have systems in place, because they had trade networks, irrigation systems, and many more social constructs. They were also a lot more inclusive of females and religions, they believed everyone had a place. The Europeans were the exact opposite of the Indians in many ways. For instance they lived, based on wealth and position, the more wealthy someone has the higher tier the position was. They were bound by rules and laws: The would face consequences so they had a lot less freedom due to the government. They were also a lot of inclusive because they would try to convert the other instead of understanding their position. They wanted to make everyone like them.
B3. What happened when the peoples of the Americas came in contact with Europeans?
There were a variety of impactful things that happened with contact of the Europeans and Indians. One such thing was Religion was severely impacted because the Cathloic church would try to control all matters of the indians from their faith, morals, and treatment of the Indians. This meant trying to forcefully convert them and the stealing of wealth and culture. They were also depopulating the Indian people on many different fronts. From murdering, kidnapping of Indian people, and spreading of diseases. They would often kidnap females to show unmanly the Indian males were. On the eve of contact they spread diseases like smallpox, influenza, and measles. The Indians never had to deal with these disease and such could not build immunity and caused the deaths of many Indians.

A1: The major patterns of the native Americans lives before Europeans arrived consist of many diversities, religious beliefs and societies. The structure of the societies hemisphere contained cities, roads, pyramids etc which many considered beauty. With a population that consisted over 200,000 people, the Americans had a civilized way of living. Although they lacked some resources such as technology like the Europeans, they were rich in their skills such as farming, hunting, fishing, developing structures of political power and religious beliefs. Most importantly, they knew how to communication amongst the different communities. Also, the Americans weren’t devoted to the accumulation of material goods and wealth like colonizers. Instead, their reputation was known for being generous, giving rather than receiving as it states “ Wealth mattered far less in the Indian society than in European society at the time” (p.15)
B3: Giovanni de Verrazano viewed the Americas in the 16th century as beautiful which he states “ beautiful of stature and build”. Over time, a negative imagine of the Indians overshadowed the positives ones as the newcomers found their way of living weak and ugly. When the people of the americas first came in contact with the Europeans, they discovered different religions, societies and gender division of labor. Initially when they came, they viewed the Americans land as a source of economic opportunity and found any reason to make the Indians land theres. In GML it states “ the English, French and Dutch came to rely on the idea that Indians had not actually “used” the land and thus had no claim to it” (p.17)
The colonizers changed their way of living because they didn’t understand the operation of which things worked. They had general idea of how people should live and didn’t like the way the Indians society worked. Europeans believed that the Indians communities had no discipline, which labeled them savages. They also believed that the men were weak and mistreated women as they had different divisions of labor. Considering their initial goal of collection potential commodities, they figured that subduing the ideas brought them “freedom”...…….. at least their version of it.

1. The native Americans were essentially opposites of the Europeans. The American men would go out and hunt while the women tended to the home and to the agriculture. These women were not commanded by their husbands and they were seen as equals. As for the Europeans, they thought the native men were not "manly". The Americans saw each other as equal and none of them were ever considered higher than the others.

1.) What actions did Indians take during the Pueblo Revolt to demonstrate their new freedom from Spanish rule?
ReplyDeleteThey burned down images of the Virgin Mary and saints. They left their wives that they were forced upon and went back to their reality. For example they even burned down places that had anything to do with christians. They went to the river to wash off the baptism that was unwanted upon them. They began to get back to their old culture and wanted things to be normal once again.
2.) Why do you think religion played such a large role in the Pueblo revolt?
Pueblo was the assault on their religion. Natives were forced to covert to Christian ways since their religion was “sinful” or unholy to the Spaniards. It was the pipe and other church members ideas to baptism the native to make them “pure”. Pueblo knew the natives would fall for his tricks because they believed strongly about their religion. Due to this outrageous situation pueblo manipulated the natives and they were stuck in a unbearable situation
