Hi All --
First -- apologies for posting this today. For that, I'm reducing the amount of questions you need to answer. Still -- I hope that you started the article over the break and/ or will attempt to read the whole thing. It is worth it on So. Many. Levels...
Also, be ready for Socratic seminar around the two questions below, plus our usual FIRST and FOURTH questions -- What stood out? Why does this matter?
Oh - and here's is the link to article:

PLEASE ANSWER ONE OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS. (Remember to use evidence from the reading!)
1. What stood out to you?
2. How have laws, policies, and systems developed to enforce the enslavement of black Americans before the Civil War influenced laws, policies, and systems in the years since?
3. How has activism by black Americans throughout U.S. history led to policies that benefit all people living in the United States?
4. Why does this matter?
1. How have laws, policies, and systems developed to enforce the enslavement of black Americans before the Civil War influenced laws, policies, and systems in the years since?
ReplyDeleteThe laws, and policies and systems developed to enforce the enslavement of black Americans by indirectly casting black people, through law, as a ''slave race''. As accurately put by Nikole Hannah- Jones, if black Americans were cast apart from the otheer races (specifically white) then they didn't deserve the rights in the Constitution. This meant that excluding them from the ''we'' in ''We the People'' was not a lie. An example of this is the Dred Scott decision, which was ruled that even if the slave was in a ''free state'', he was still a slave because he was properety. This, as said before, laid the groundword for years of racial oppression, even if the laws for black Americans overtime got better.
2. How has activism by black Americans throughout U.S. history led to policies that benefit all people living in the United States?
ReplyDeleteActivism by Black Americans has benefited all people in the US by them advocating for the rights that could not simply acquire. Coming from Nikole Hannah-Jones the polices that benefit United States citizens today was based of this idea, “It is we who have been the perfecters of this democracy.” We being represented as black Americans because without black Americans fight to obtain democracy, democracy itself would be formed differently today in the United States. Hannah also express this through the fact that black Americans have been denied their basic rights then they fought to help the country live up to its ideals(even though the US is still having a difficult time doing that, the country still tries to live up to our 5 ideals). Black Americans have paved the way for other minorities groups to gain their rights: women, homosexuals, immigrants, disabled people, etc.
2. How has activism by black Americans throughout U.S. history led to policies that benefit all people living in the United States?
ReplyDeleteBlack Americans ' advocacy has helped many people in the U.S. by fighting for freedoms which couldn't be gained easily. The initiatives that support the citizens of this country today is founded on this theory, from Nikole Hannah-Jones. “It is we who have been the perfecters of this democracy.” People are portrayed as black Americans, because in the United States today, society itself could be established differently without people of color struggling to obtain independence. Hannah also illustrates this by denying people of color their fundamental rights, instead working to help the world measure up to its values (although the US still has a hard time doing that, the government is still trying to live up to its five ideals). Black Americans have laid the foundation for other groups of individuals to claim equal rights: women, homosexuals, immigrants, people with disabilities, etc.
2. How has activism by black Americans throughout U.S. history led to policies that benefit all people living in the United States?
ReplyDeleteActivism by black Americans throughout the U.S. had led to policies that benefit all people living in the United States by advocating for their rights. With the the declaration of independence States that ” all men are created equal“ and “endowed by their creator with certain unalienable right.” The white people who wrote this didn’t really apply it to the black male. With the black community protesting and resisting against the wrong that had been done they have paved a way for women’s, immigrants, gay, and disability rights. If there weren’t centuries of resistance the democracy would look more like a republican today. Their “life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness” have not been given to them even when they made up one fifth of the country.
2. How has activism by black Americans throughout U.S. history led to policies that benefit all people living in the United States?
ReplyDeleteBlack Americans advocacy has helped many people in the U.S. by fighting for rights that they couldn't simply gain. The policies that favor U.S. citizens today were based on this concept from Nikole Hannah-Jones, "It is we who have been the perfectors of this democracy." Without black Americans or people of color, the United States would’ve been shaped differently if they’re weren’t any colored person fighting for their independence.
2.) Black Americans advocacy has helped many people within the U.S. by fighting for rights that’s they couldn’t gain. “It’s is we who have been the perfectors of this democracy.” Without people of color the United States wouldn’t be what it is now or how is it is shaped if the people of color didn’t fight for their independence. If there wasn’t centuries of of resistance the democracy would look more like a Republican Party today. The life, liberty, and purist of happiness has not been given to them even if they were born with it or fought for it.
ReplyDeleteBlack Americans advocacy has helped many people within the U.S. because the fight for black rights opened the doors for other rights to gain. “Black rights struggles paved the way for every other rights struggles”. Without blacks the United States wouldn’t be the country it is today. Nikole says “without the idealistic, strenuous and patriotic efforts of black Americans, our democracy today would most likely look different”. Black American have molded this country into what it is and without black Americans this country would fall to its knees.
ReplyDelete2. How has activism by black Americans throughout U.S. history led to policies that benefit all people living in the United States?
ReplyDeleteBlack Activism have been around for an extremely long time, the author even stated that Black Activism is the root of giving all other oppressed minorities a voice. She states, “Black rights struggles paved the way for every other rights struggles.” With that being said, African Americans paved the way for not only people but this country. Without us, there would be no America, no Ideals, no Modern Technology that roots from what Black people created and the list goes on and on. Black people fought hard for their independence and because of this it was like a domino effect for other minorities.
How have laws, policies, and systems developed to enforce the enslavement of black Americans before the Civil War influenced laws, policies, and systems in the years since?
ReplyDeleteThe laws and systems created to enforce slavery addressed black Americans as the “slave race”. Explained by Nikole Hannah-Jones, the separation of blacks when speaking of the we in “We the people”, basically taking away their constitution rights. For example, the Dred Scott decision ruled that even in a free state he was still a slave. This decision was only the start of constant oppression for black Americans.

ReplyDeleteThe laws, and policies and systems developed to enforce the enslavement of black Americans by indirectly casting black people, through law, as a ''slave race''. Nikole Hannah- Jones reports if black Americans were cast apart from the other races (white) then they didn't deserve the rights in the Constitution. 2. Black Americans being activist has help pave the way for other people to gain rights. As mentioned in the text “yet never fought for ourselves”. This showings that even though we fought for equal rights for blacks the fight all along wasn’t for ourselves but yet it was for all of the people who were treated equally.
