  1. What are Sewall's main objections to slavery and what authority does he cite to support his objections?

Sewall’s objections to slavery is that everyone is equal, he quoted from the Bible, “ And hath made of One Blood, all Nations of men, for to dwell on all the face of the earth.” Sewall believes that all men are the Sons of Adam, thus slavery shouldn’t exist.

Why does Sewall believe that blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders as free persons?

Sewall believe that blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders as free persons, he states “ yet their continual aspiring after their forbidden liberty, renders them unwilling servants.” Sewall also talks about how blacks skin color and hair are different from the New Englanders that they will never be able to connect with them.

  2. 1) What are Sewall's main objections to slavery and what authority does he cite to support his objections?

Sewall’s main objectives to slavery is that it is against God. He cites different books and scriptures in the Bible to support his objections, like Pslam 115.16, Acts 17,26,27 and others

    2) Why does Sewall believe that blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders as free persons?

He believes that blacks cannot be among New Englanders because of there “disparity in their conditions, color and hair, they can never...grow up into orderly families, to the peopling of the land.

  3. 1) What are Sewall's main objections to slavery and what authority does he cite to support his objections?

Sewall's main objection to slavery was that it was against God's word, also known as the Bible. It even says in one book,Exodus, that one who steals and sells a person, will surely be put to death.

Why does Sewall believe that blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders as free persons?

He believes that blacks cannot be free persons among New Englanders because few don't even like the sound of them being free since "disparity in their conditions, color and hair" meaning that they "can never embody with us".

  4. 1A: Samuel Sewell, a judge and businessman best known for his involvement of the Salem witch trails uses biblical passages, including exodus 21:16, “ and seeing god hath said, he that stealeth a man and selleth him, or if he he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death”. By Sewall using different scriptures in the Bible, it proves that God doesn’t condemn slavery as he states “ it is most certain that all men, as they are the sons of Adam.... have equal right unto liberty and all other outward comforts of life”

2B: Samuel Sewell believes that blacks can’t be free amongst the New Englanders as he states “ few can endure to hear of a negros being made free; and indeed they can seldom use their freedom well; yet their continual aspiring after their forbidden liberty, renders them unwilling Servants”. The colonizers didn’t want Africans to be free because they were afraid of how they would use their freedom and didn’t want them to be considered as their equal because they weren’t white.

  5. 1) What are Sewall's main objections to slavery and what authority does he cite to support his objections?

Sewall’s main objection to slavery was that it was against God. He sites Pslam 115.16 & Acts 17.26, & 27. It goes on to say that if someone was to sell a person the will be destined for death. It also says that , “ as sons of Adam,... have equal rights unto liberty, and all other outward comforts of life”.

    2) Why does Sewall believe that blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders as free persons?

Sewall believes that blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders se free persons because “their conditions, color, & hair”. They also could never embody the New Englanders and grow up into orderly families to the people of the land.

  6. 1) What are Sewall's main objections to slavery and what authority does he cite to support his objections?
Sewall's main objections to slavery is the purchasing, selling, and stealing of human beings. He quotes the bible and states "There is no proportion between twenty pieces of silver, and liberty....Tis pity there should be more caution used in buying a horse, or a little lifeless dust; than there is in purchasing men and women :Whereas they are the offspring of God, and their liberty is and seeing God hath said, He stealth a man and sleuth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death. Exodus 21.16. What Sewall is esstially saying is does not agree with Slavery at all as a whole and he uses the text of the bible to do.

  7. 2) Why does Sewall believe that blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders as free persons?
Sewell believes that blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders as free people because of differences among both groups. He states "And there is such disparity in their conditions, color, and hair that they can never embody with us, and grow up into orderly families" Seawalls believes that the differences of the New Englanders and the slavery hinder the two groups from co existing in close quarters.

  8. 1) What are Sewall's main objections to slavery and what authority does he cite to support his objections?

He believed that slavery, was against the word of god. They used quotes from the bible. They said it was hypocritical against the words and teaching of god. Especially, around the concept of equal treatment and owning another human being, because in the bible it says a person, who owns a slave is going to face a experience of death.

    2) Why does Sewall believe that blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders as free persons?

He basically states that people would be able to handle the fact that negreos having the same rights as they do. They didn't want them to have the same equal rights as them because they were scared of what their going to do.

  9. 1) What are Sewall's main objections to slavery and what authority does he cite to support his objections?

Sea walls main objections to slavery was that slavery was against the word of and teaching of gods word. It was very hypocritical especially around the concept of “equal treatment” but having to own slaves in the Bible it states that “ who owns slaves is going to experience death”. Seawall does not agree with the way of owning another human.

    2) Why does Sewall believe that blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders as free persons?

Seawall believes that black should have equal rights as everyone else but people wouldn’t be able to handle the fact that “blacks” are free and having the same rights as everyone else. They would be more afraid of a black being free , then a black being free and educated. So they wouldn’t want them to be “untamed” as the new England’s would say.

  10. What are Sewall's main objections to slavery and what authority does he cite to support his objections?
Sweall's main objection to slavery is that it goes against the words of the bible. He cites Exodus 21:16 where it essentially states that if you own another human which is a offspring of God you will face death.
Why does Sewall believe that blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders as free persons?
Sewall believes that blacks cannot live with the New Englanders as free people because there will always be differences between the two groups. They will never see eye to eye because of these differences therefore blacks will not be able to live freely.

  11. Sewall believes that slavery goes against the Bible and it goes against God he believes everyone should be equal because that’s what the Bible says

He believes blacks can not be among the New Englanders as free people because they are different than them. They will never get along and the New englanders would not be able to handle blacks being able to be as free as them

  12. 1. Sewall's main objection to slavery was that it goes against God and what it written in the bible. He says " So that originally, and naturally, there is no such thing as slavery...".

    2. Sewall believes blacks are unable to live amongst the New Englanders because of their differences and because "few can endure to hear of a Negro's being made free" meaning not many people are happy and can handle blacks being free people.

  13. 1) What are Sewall's main objections to slavery and what authority does he cite to support his objections?

Sewall main objections to slavery and or what he believed was that slavery and slave labor in general went against the Bible and the ways of God,he even cited scriptures from chapters such as Acts and Exodus.

    2) Why does Sewall believe that blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders as free persons?

He believes this because one, many people in NE weren't ready from blacks to be set free probably because it wasn't a normal day by day thing to see blacks liberated. Also, posed a threat on so many levels, even economically when you think about it.

  14. What are Sewall's main objections to slavery and what authority does he cite to support his objections?

Sewall's main objection to slavery was that it was against God's word (The Bible). It says in a book that one who steals and sells a person, will surely be put to death. A form of having or selling slaves is wrong and cruel and you will be punished for what you are doing.

Why does Sewall believe that blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders as free persons?

He believes that blacks can’t be free persons among New Englanders because few don't even like the sound of them being free since disparity (a great difference) between them all. For a example they talking about how their hair & skin tone isn’t the same so they won’t be able to connect with them on a personal level. They will always be looked at as different based on them traits and will be treated differently too.

  15. 1. Sewell’s main objections to slavery was that one man should not own another and that a man should not be taken away from his family. He sites all his objections by God and bible scriptures.
    2. Sewell’s believe that’s blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders as free people because the whites would not be able to handle the equality of man and that they will not be able to “ grow up into orderly families, to the peopling of the land”.

  16. Sewall objects the fact that he believes all people were made equal and that we all have a purpose that should be fulfilled within oneself not someone telling them what needs to be done. They should not put more excitement into buying people than they would with the things they have.

New Englnders will never see black people as "free persons" they will always have the mindset of African(s) (American) working and doing as they say. Also black people would began to make other black people work for them

  19. 1) What are Sewall's main objections to slavery and what authority does he cite to support his objections?

Sewall’s main objections against slavery was that it contradicts what god says in the Bible. (That everyone should be equal)

    2) Why does Sewall believe that blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders as free persons?

Sewell believes that blacks cannot remain among the New Englanders as free persons because of the color line that divides the races. For example in the passage the phrase “disparity in their conditions, color and hair" meaning that the African Americans “can never embody with us"(The New Englanders”).
