The major charges against Anne Hutchinson was that she troubled the peace of the commonwealth and the churches by having her own opinions about the religion, harboring and countenance people in meetings l, try to “seduce” honest Puritans about her belief and make them turn against the church, saying that she heard God speaking to her- which she was not allowed to say because “God does not speak to women” only through the preacher or the Bible- and breaking the fifth commandment.

The Hutchinson case tells us that the Puritan authorities did not really understand the understand the definition of religious freedom.
People were only “free” to listen to what the preacher said about the Holy Bible. They were not allowed to to form there own opinions about what they thought the scripture was about or question the preacher especially if you were a women.

ReplyDeleteThe major charges in the Hutchinson case were that she was disturbing the commonwealth's peace by preaching about her own opinions of religion. In the 1600s, it was "absurd" for a woman to even have such a thought on such an important matter. The court believes that Hutchinson tried to "seduce" the Puritans into believing her words are the truth. She also broke the fifth commandment.

The Hutchinson case tells us that the Puritan churches were free to listen to the teaching on the Holy day. Though they cannot interpret the teachings in their own way and cannot form their own opinions about religion. It really was blasphemous if you were a woman coming up with these "wild" ideas.
1. The major charges against Anne Hutchinson was that she went against the puritans beliefs. Anne believed in something different then what she was taught. She would have meetings at her home trying to force her beliefs on them and try to prove to them what they learned in church is wrong.
ReplyDelete2. The Hutchinson case tells us that Puritan authorities was to only believe what they were taught about their religion, beliefs, taught in church. The Puritans valued order more than they valued freedom. And since Anne went against Puritans beliefs she was no longer allowed to stay.

The Anne Hutchinson case shows that the puritans sees religious freedom as threatening to the very structure of their commonwealth. The puritans sees their form of Christianity as absolute and will defend it at all cost against any force or logic from proving it to be wrong as shown by the way they handled Anne's case

The Hutchinson case shows that the Puritan authorities understood the idea of religious freedom as a system of order rather than total religious freedom.

Hutchinson case tells us that the Puritan authorities value order more than they value the religion but they use Gods name to justify their reasons.

ReplyDeleteWhat seems to be the major charges against Anne Hutchinson is that she was going against the Puritans in check. Hutchinson was interfering with the commonwealths peace by holding secretive meetings and stated her personal opinions about religion.

It tells us that the religion itself was very one sided, like you could do one thing but if you moved the wrong way in their eyes they were disrespecting the Puritan religion.
1A:The major charges against Anne Hutchinson were that she violated the 5th commandment, speaking against the pertain religion of the settlers. Because she was women defying the head of power, exposing the church for teaching the word of god incorrectly, she was banished from the Englands jurisdictions.
ReplyDelete2B:The puritans had their own idea of religion freedom, in which Anne Hutchinson exposed. In VOF, it states “ predestined to go to heaven from the damned through activities such as church attendance and moral behavior rather than by inner state of grace”. By the puritans interpreting the the New Testament this way, they used their society’s religion as a way to manipulate their citizens for personal reasons. Because Anne Hutchinson exposed high authority of their wrong doing, she was banished from the land because higher authorities were afraid that people would find the truth from a woman, which at the time held no real authority.

There was no room for expression. She though that they were using religion for their own means, and felt that the people should have more freedom in the matter.

ReplyDeleteAnne Hutchinson was charged because she chose to preach about her own religion. The court did not like the fact that a woman was trying to take charge of them. They also thought that she was trying to seduce the people.

The case tells use that the Puritans were strict on what was to be taught. They did not want their people believing in anything besides what their church was teaching them.
